Candlelight Ceremony, World Summit on Sustainable Development
JOHANNESURG, SOUTH AFRICA -- Wednesday 28 August, 2002 -- The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) lit a memorial candle at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) to highlight the plight of workers from unsustainable forms of production. A Candlelight Ceremony was intended to highlight the positive transformation that should flow from the activities of people who have worked and died while promoting sustainable development. Musical participants included the POPCRU (Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union) choir (below left) and Sharon Abreu and Michael Hurwicz (below right, talking to members of POPCRU.

Implementation Conference, World Summit on Sustainable Development
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA -- Saturday 24 August, 2002 -- The Implementation Conference Stakeholder Action for Our Common Future met at the Indaba Hotel in Johannesburg to collectively create clear, measurable ongoing action to implement the Sustainable Development Agreements in four specific areas: Health, Food Security, Energy and Fresh Water. Sharon Abreu and Michael Hurwicz (Irthlingz) provided musical entertainment and inspiration at the beginning of the conference (on Saturday, August 24) and again at the conclusion of the conference (on Sunday, August 25). They also took the opportunity to speak with John Turner, the head of the United States delegation to the WSSD. After hearing them perform their original song, "Wild, Wild River," Turner requested a copy of the upcoming CD, "Seeking Sanctuary," sponsored by Irthlingz. During the WSSD , Ms. Abreu, in her capacity as a trade union member and delegate, was selected to present Energy Caucus and trade union position papers on energy to Mr. Turner.
